Of Music and Scrooge McDuck

I’m listening to a comic book soundtrack, and I’m nowhere close to ashamed.

Tuomas Holopainen — you might know him as the founder of symphonic metal wizards Nightwish — has released an album “inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.” And it’s pretty darn good.

I’ve written about music and writers before, and so all I’ll say now is that I’m playing this album as I’m writing my second-world fantasy and introducing my second race and its tragedy. And while that’s a long, long way from the Klondike, it works just fine.

Intrigued? There’s even a music video.

 Teaser Tuesday

So what is this new music facilitating? I should warn you — it’s very raw, the character’s very names are still evolving, and I don’t have so much as a title yet. But here’s a tiny exploratory peek:

They had been a great people once, and they still considered themselves such — but secretly, Keau wondered if their days of greatest glory were gone forever. They no longer made active war on each border, fighting both scales and leather, and while Keau practiced daily his forms and magics, he spent more hours with his music. His father Gromgest had led hordes into battle when he was young, long before he had sired Keau, but now he passed his days and nights with his harem, achieving conquests of another kind.

Most days, Keau did not trouble himself with these thoughts. He had his music to occupy him, and women of his own, and if the burden of state had grown less weighty by the time it descended to his own shoulders, he would hardly complain. Most days, he woke with one of his pleasure women warm against him in his sleeping pit, ate a leisurely breakfast, trained his hands in magic or music (he alternated his practice by his mood), and then attended his father for any court business.

This morning, though, he was awakened early.

My favorite part of this is the “both scales and leather.” Spoiler: leather is humans.

Recommendation

Well, today’s recommendation should be kind of obvious: You can buy the album at Amazon, and this is an affiliate link. Please enjoy.

  1. I actually tried to tag you, TR, but FB was being wonky.

  2. FB is weird someti…ofte…pretty much all the time.

It really is a great soundtrack. It’s just about impossible to beat Nightwish or Nightwish-esque music.
