Yuki-onna (雪女, the snow woman) from the Hyakka…

The yuki onna is a femme fatale of Japanese folklore. When travelers are lost or exhausted in the winter snows, the yuki onna (“snow woman”) appears to greet them — and they are never seen again.

Yuki onna are always extremely beautiful, and they are icy cold to the touch. From what I’ve found, they usually appear in Heian fashion with long, dark, free-flowing hair — perhaps the better to whip about in the wild wind dramatically as she descends upon you. (Pieces pulling loose from a complex Edo hairstyle, say, would just be a bit embarrassing.)

My friend, the phenomenally-accomplished Amanda “Elemental” Irwin, recently did a photoshoot with with a lovely yuki onna, played by the lovely Sarcasm-hime (Maral Agnerian), and it’s amazing. They were each generous enough to allow me to share them with you.

While the yuki onna has only a passing appearance in Kitsune-Mochi, I have to say that these images made me wish I’d given her a larger part. We’ll see what happens during final revisions.

So, though I don’t do Wordless Wednesday well (far too wordy!), here’s a gallery of gorgeous for you.

  1. Gorgeous! I love things that are beautiful and deadly. (Love them from a distance, that is.)
