How Do I Love Chocolate? Let Me Count the Ways….

(I wanted to be blogging this week about the Midwest Writers Workshop and the coolness thereof, but I’ve been considerably distracted. So please accept this pre-written post about chocolate in the meanwhile.)

What does dark chocolate do for me?

Well, it provides the caffeine which I don’t get from coffee. (Yeah, I’m one of the maybe four writers in the hemisphere who don’t drink coffee. Makes me the odd one out at conferences and workshops, where I have to find my own soft drink or something.)

It provides magnesium and proanthocyanidins. Which are important, or something.

It supports the production of dopamine, which is a feel-good chemical important for everything from learning to mental health. And it increases endorphins, which is another major feel-good player.

Also it prompts the release of phenylethylamines. You know when else phenylethylamines are released? When we’re in love with someone. You know how people say they love chocolate? They do.

Not to mention, phytonutrients and antioxidants and flavonoids, all connected ways of saying, Chocolate helps fight free radicals in the body.

Also, it fuels me during tough revisions. Which is all I’m really concerned about during those revisions. So let’s find some socially-responsible, slave-free chocolate and get to work!

  1. You’re definitely not the only writer in Indy who doesn’t drink coffee. I can tolerate certain, chocolate-flavored, exceedingly sweet forms of coffee, but in general the only way I drink it is Starbucks’ green coffee/fruit infusions. So next year at the writer’s conference, you and I will be hunting down Coke Zero and Diet Dr. Pepper together! :)

  2. LOVE chocolate. LOVE coffee. I live in the Pacific Northwest where it’s gray and rainy in the winter, so need all the caffeine I can get. Great post! (Stopping by from IU)

  3. Love Chocolate, especially Dark. Stopped by from IU. Visit me at alkaplan.wordpress.com

  4. My daughter doesn’t drink coffee, either. I don’t know what’s wrong with her. :D Hi from the IU blogfest!

  5. I’m the other one, can’t stand coffee. I grew up in Seattle, imagine me not liking coffee! Chocolate is definitely the thing that keeps me going, especially during revisions.
